Geneticks have recently announced a new program, TickMD.com, which is focused on providing “rapid, accessible healthcare to individuals bitten by ticks.” Geneticks and Casel Medical have collaborated to provide this virtual program with access to a trained tick-borne disease knowledgeable physician.

Although it is strongly recommended that you have the tick testing results “in hand” prior to seeing the physician “this program can still be accessed by individuals who did not retain the tick following a bite or were unable to test the tick.”

Presently TickMD.com is only available in Ontario.

How Does It Work?

  1. Safely remove the tick.
  2. Submit the tick to Geneticks for testing.
  3. Book an appointment with the TickMD physician.

During the virtual visit the physician will review your tick bite, medical history, tick testing results and make an informed decision on the best course of care. If need be a prescription will be faxed to a pharmacy of your choosing.

Once you have received your tick testing results follow the link provided in your Geneticks’ results by computer or smart phone or visit www.tickmd.ca to book your virtual appointment available either Mondays (9 am to 2:40 pm) or Thursdays (10 am to 11 am).

The news release states that all virtual care for this program is covered by OHIP for your appointment.

In the absence of tick testing results you can still book an appointment but obviously the MD will be hindered by not having this key information. Genetics is a private laboratory that accepts ticks from anywhere in Canada. They can test for up to 14 tick-borne pathogens and guarantee to return results within one to five business days.

Geneticks provides publicly accessible information about where ticks and their associated pathogens are found in Canada – according to their data.
