During the 1980s Fred Johnston operated THE BAIT BOX which featured fishing equipment and Army Surplus. To-day it is a restaurant. It’s located across from the Brewers Retail store on Madawaska Street.

Fred was always a good, knowledgeable source of fishing lore. Where were the fish biting; on what; what time of day? What he didn’t realize was that he was, for a time, part of the female fashion circle.

Fred took pride in having lots of up-to-date stock but for some reason he couldn’t maintain his ‘snap-swivels’. You can find these at the terminal tackle end of your fishing line. They make it easier to attach a lure or hook. Easier than tieing the line. It makes changing lures much easier and quicker.

One day Jan, Fred’s wife, was minding the store. When the 5th girl arrived and purchased some packs of swivels Jan just had to ask: “Excuse me, but are you really going fishing?”

“Oh no,” replied the young lady, “they’re for my wrist and ankle bracelets.”

And where are all of the artificial rubber worms going?

Some guy from Toronto makes punk jewellery and sells it in the big city. Keeps the supplier busy – and happy!
