Sararas Elk

THE SARARAS BULL

A YOUNG BULL

I first met Perry Sararas, Todd and Justin Young at Dave Park’s farm during the opening day of the elk hunt. Terry Young was also a member but had just gone through an untimely knee operation and so was out of action – at least temporarily. “When they called and said they could operate I didn’t want to miss my chance and have a long wait,” he told me later. Perry had the bull seal. Although the Park’s farm had been invaded by nuisance elk since the days of the farm’s previous owner the animals decided to make themselves scarce on this opening day. It was not to be a matter of picking one out of a herd. In fact it was going to actually be a hunt. And so four days later, on September 22, after the morning mist lifted, Todd Young received a response to his cow call and at 7:10 a.m. took a fine 4×5 bull using a .270 with a 150 grain bullet. The check station confirmed the elk’s weight at 400 pounds (or 181 kg).

AND FINALLY…

A crew hired by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to paint school zones on a newly paved road spelled one zone “shcool”. (Even my computer automatically initially corrected that misspelling.)
